There was no fire department in the early years. Little could be done when a house or barn caught fire. In 1917 the Newington Volunteer Fire Department was founded and in 1918 a fire truck was purchased. The town's first fire bell was the bell on the Congregational Church. In 1928 the town bought a siren and put it on top of the town hall. The original Company One, on the corner of Main Street and Walsh Avenue, is one of three fire houses built in 1929. A new Company One, also on Main Street, was built in 1967. The original Company One was restored in 1998. Newington's fire fighters have a long proud history. | |
