The history of libraries in Newington dates back to 1752. The library was housed in the upper room of the town hall until 1939. The Welles sisters donated land and $10,000 to the town in 1919 to be used for a free public library named in memory of their mother. The town purchased adjoining land and in 1939 the Lucy Robbins Welles Library opened. The original Lucy Robbins Welles Library reproduced the look of a colonial home. As the town grew, the library expanded also. The most recent addition, completed in 1988, has kept features of the original building.
