INFORMATION ABOUT SELECTED PROJECTS IN INDIA ASSISTED BY V.S.E.I.

 

Blind Men's Association (BMA), Mumbai & National Association for the Blind (NAB), Mumbai:  The Blind Men's Association (BMA), Mumbai and NAB are organizations exemplifying the ideal of self-help. Some of BMA's major schemes are: Scholarships; Home Teaching & Counselling; Braille & Talking Books Library; a Book Bank; and other projects for the welfare of the blind, which help both blind children and the children of blind parents.    VSEI has in the past assisted BMA in their Scholarships Project & Book Bank project, and  NAB, Mumbai with educational aids & equipment for use in  teaching &  for developing new materials. More recently,  VSEI has been assisting them in Computer Education and Training, and the training of blind people in the use of text-to-speech software .

Stree Seva Mandir, Chennai (Tamil Nadu):  This institution is devoted to activities for the welfare of women, esp. long-term programs  for providing education and vocational training. Started in 1949, Stree Seva Mandir has been dedicated to the cause of  the poor and socially backward women and children, and offers education, vocational training, and a variety of services for their benefit. Its activities include vocational training and employment centers, schools, hostels and other services  such as Mobile Creches, Day Care Centers, and Maternity Centers. Our assistance to them since the mid-1970's has  been well-utilized towards the welfare of women

K.L. Institute for the Deaf, Bhavnagar (Gujarat):  This school was started in 1960 by a group of social workers and parents of deaf children in response to local needs. Their programs, slowly expanding over the years,  emphasize the following:  Providing education and training for the deaf and integrating them in the normal school; Detection of deafness;  Promoting preventive measures; and related services for the total rehabilitation of the deaf.   VSEI has assisted them since the early 1980's, with educ. materials,  scholarships & sponsorships of children,  classroom teaching for hearing impaired children,  and facilties & services for testing these children.

Rashtriya Vidyalaya Educational Consortium, Bangalore ( Karnataka):  This project started with the teacher training institution R.V. Teachers College, whose activities include teacher training, developing new methods and materials for teaching, and workshops & training sessions for teachers.   VSEI has been working with them since the early 1970's. assisting them iin Computer Education, science & mathematics, educational grants, and scholarships for children.  VSEI’s work here is now focussed on the RVSEI Educational Resource Center, a program of workshops in computer education, language teaching and science education, and a teachers’ forum.

Prerana Shishu Vidyalaya, Kanpur (U.P.) :  In 1985,  a group of young people in Kanpur formed the organization “Prerana”  to combat the ignorance and lack of awareness that caused the social inequity there. In 1987, they started  Prerana Shishu Vidyalaya to teach the children of the laborers in the area.  They increased the scope of their activities every year, adding more  teachers and helping more children.    VSEI  assists them in their basic needs and in their plans for extending their work  to another school.

Welfare Society for the Deaf and Retarded, Hooghly (West Bengal). The scope of this Society includes (a) A School for the Deaf and a School for the Mentally Retarded, of which the first has been functioning for many years; (b) a Diagnostic Clinic; (c) a Parents' Guidance Clinic; (d) a Speech Training Clinic; and (e) a Workshop Complex for Vocational Training for Handicapped.   VSEI has been assisting them with educational & training aids, and help in computer education for hearing impaired persons.

VSEI Scholarship Scheme and VSEI Sponsor-a-Child Plan:   In the Scholarship Scheme, needy & deserving children are given scholarship awards, which have been found to be helpful by many recipients.  In the Sponsor-a-Child Plan,  a sponsor here can partly support a needy child in India.   We invite well-wishers to establish scholarship awards for needy children, and/or to sponsor a child.
