It is necessary to explain how Stonehenge came to be used by the Druids and how it was preserved. During the Renaissance the Druids were rediscovered and "were claimed as historical ancestors." (Witcombe 1997) Then in 1781 the Ancient Order of Druids was founded. Then they started "their annual summer solstice celebrations at Stonehenge." (Witcombe 1997) Stonehenge was also a tourist attraction. Unfortunately, in the year 1900, this caused a lot of damage and the owner put a fence around the site and charged people to enter. Later in 1915 Stonehenge was sold and then given to the nation. (Witcombe 1997) Later on the Druids and tourists were banned and the only way for them to gain access and worship is by getting a permit to worship. (Stanchak 1997, 21)

Unfortunately this protective measures haven't been that useful. Stonehenge has been the target of graffiti, the fencing itself and visitors taking souvenirs. Additionally, there are the forces of nature working on it to. (Fitts, 1997)
