The Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) results were released recently. The test is administered to all Connecticut public high school sophomores and covers the areas Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science. Superintendent Alan Beitman said, “Last year’s class had very strong scores and this year’s class had more students achieving the state goal score in three of the four areas of the test.”
The percent of Lewis S. Mills High School students at or above the state goal score improved in Writing, Mathematics and Science. “The goal score is meant to be a challenge for students and our students rose to that challenge,” added high school principal, Karissa Niehoff. She attributed the improvement to “the efforts of teachers to align assessment and learning and to assist students with reading and writing skills in all curriculum areas.” She added, “The faculty has been collaborating on examining assessment results and making changes that promote student learning. For example, students do more reading and writing and see more simulations that develop their thinking.”
Mathematics scores showed the biggest gain with 77.1% of all sophomores achieving the goal score. Assistant Principal, Pamela Lazaroski noted, “This is nearly a 15 point gain. That rarely happens.” The percent of students achieving goal in science was up 3.9% and in writing the gain was 0.4%. Reading showed a drop of 3.8 percentage points.
Lewis S. Mills CAPT Results also showed slight gains in students achieving the Advanced score in every tested area.
