Region Ten K-5 Student's Mathematics Page

Back To Mathematics Homepage

This page is intended to give you opportunities to practice your math skills and seek out help on assignments.

For "Skill in Arithmetic Page": Click Here

“Skill in Arithmetic” - A fun way to get better with arithmetic.  A self-paced tutorial that is appropriate for students who are ready to begin working on their arithmetic. (See Frequently Asked Question:Why is it Harmful to teach Computational Algorithms without Understanding?” for more information.)

Information and Research

The Math Forum: the best and most extensive site on the web. With a little searching you can find everything related to math on this one site: Click Here
Spy Guys This is a really fun site, but it is also very informative.  It's from the Learn Alberta web site which has resources for all the grades and all the classes, but this particular link is the best in my opinion.  When it first opens you can watch the introduction which is a little movie or skip it.

Either way, the next page gives you a few options.  You have four places you can go to:

  • Lessons – Is a series of lessons on various math topics.  The Problem Solving Bank is a set of problems that are like the ones we do in the Problem Solving Workshops.
  • Strategies – Explains and gives examples of some common problem solving strategies often used.
  • Glossary – An interactive list of math terms.
  • Operations – This section explains strategies for learning basic facts for all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Math 5 Live:  This is another grade level resource created by the Learn Alberta group.  Even though this is geared towards grade 5 and Spy Guys is geared towards grade 6 many of the topics are appropriate for our students as early as grade 3.
The set up is similar to Spy Guys.  Once the link loads, you may watch or skip the introduction and then you have a few options you can choose by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the screen.
  • Lessons: Is like a table of contents listing lessons by topic.
  • Glossary: Definitions of math terms.  Using graphics and some animations to try and explain what the terms mean.
  • Guided Tour: Animated tutorial that shows you how to use the site.

Activities, Games And Puzzles

BBC School Page
This is a fantastic site.  It is actually many sites in one.  The BBC has created a fantastic site for teachers, students, and parents.  This link takes you to the 4 to 11 year old math page. but you can navigate to many other worthwhile sites by using the links in the side bar to the left.
  • Make sure you check out the last link KS2 Bitesize Maths – it is my personal favorite.
Maths is Fun
(Language Note: Mathematics is commonly called Math in the US and Maths in the UK and in many other countries) This is a very good site with lots of nice features.  One of the best is the dictionary.  Very useful if you need to look up a term when you are doing your homework. It is very well organized and has activities broken up by the Math strands: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data.  It also has a section on money, and you can choose American coins.
Welcome to Math Playground!
Math Playground is an action packed site for students in grades K to 6.  Practice your math skills, play a logic game and have some fun!
Interactive Manipulative Site. Virtual Activities – Games and Activities on the computer that use manipulatives like Pattern Blocks, Base 10 Blocks, and Tangrams.
Mega Math  Mathematics is lively and exciting; it is a field more akin to art and poetry than many people think.
We are concerned that so much of the ``good stuff'' doesn't make it's way into the math classrooms until graduate school.
Good mathematics ultimately comes from questions that bug you! We will have succeeded if you enjoy the activities and come away from them with some annoying unanswered questions. All of the activities involve hands-on exploration, and lots of opportunities for mathematical thinking, problem-solving and communication. All of the topics are live, important areas of current mathematical research. When mathematicians consider these subjects, they do just what you will be doing---wrestling with interesting ideas, and having that special kind of fun that comes from tenacious and satisfying thinking.

Problem Solving

Thinking Blocks – This is a very fun way to learn to show your thinking as you solve problems.  When you first log on, click on the “Try It” button to the left.  When the next screen comes up click the shaded bubble that says “Try Thinking Blocks” and watch the video that is part of Step 1.  You can choose addition/subtraction or multiplication/division.  Hope you have as much fun as I did!
Brain Teasers For Kids Each week this site will post new Brain Teasers at each of three grade ranges: 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. Select one or all three and see if you can get the right answer. Check back next week when they post the solutions, along with three new puzzles. The Brain Teasers are meant to build problem-solving skills, so they may take a little while to solve. If you get stuck check the hints they provide for each question.
Visit Aunty Math for a challenge!
Aims Puzzle Corner The AIMS Puzzle Corner provides over 100 interesting puzzles that can help students learn to enjoy puzzles and the mathematics behind them. The puzzles are categorized by type, and within each category are listed in order of increasing difficulty. The puzzles have have not been assigned a grade level appropriateness because we have discovered that the ability to do a puzzle varies by individual not grade level.
Math Olympiad Problem of the Month – Problems brought to you by the same people that host the Math Olympiad contests each year.  These problems stress math vocabulary and are good for upper elementary school students.
Brain Food! Give your mind a work out on our devious collection of puzzles. There are hundreds, ranging from word games to logic problems to riddles. Some are tricky. Some require innovation. All require thinking power. Good luck.
