Welcome to the companion website for Elementary and Middle School Mathematics, Sixth Edition, by John A. Van de Walle.
This is not the version of the book you were given, but it is very similar. In a sense, this version is a compilation of all three volumes of Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics.
I think you will find this link a very useful one because the authors have put together a lot of resources in a very organized format. To begin, click on a chapter of interest or use the search feature on the top right of the page.
Once you have chosen a chapter, you can click on any of these sections, which are available for each chapter.
* Summary of key ideas in the selected chapter very concise. Sort of a cliff notes version of each chapter.
* Web-links: This is actual websites related to the chapter topic.
* Web Activities: This is some thought provoking questions and activities for a teacher’s professional development.
* Expanded Lessons Usually only 1 per chapter, but is a good example of a student-centered lesson plan.
* Additional Readings: A bibliography of books and articles related to chapter topic.
You can also use the printable worksheets in the Blackline Masters section and the lists of recommended books in Children's Literature to help teach your students in class.

Marilyn Burns Math Solutions- Marilyn Burns is one of the most influential math educators in the United States. This page is part of her Math Solutions web site. This page gives you access to many useful resources by navigating through the header or on the tab bar to the left.
Resources I strongly recommend are the newsletter (header) and Classroom Q and A (tab bar to the left). |
| Illuminations This is a very powerful web site. Teachers can reference lesson plans, virtual manipluatives, and links to other web sites all sorted by math topic and grade level. |
| The Math Forum The leading online resource for improving math learning, teaching, and communication since 1992. Must have an account to have access to some features including the problem library. Region 10 teachers should email me if they want me to set up an account for them. glasgowb@region10ct.org Some really good features in this site including Math Tools and a Math Topic Library set up by grade level and math topic. |
Connecticut State Department of Education - Mathematics.
This link will give you access to many resources from the State. Of particular interest is the revised frameworks which will be driving the 4th generation of the CMT. Also, this site has some great links at the bottom of the page. |
Kathi Mitchell's Math Page for Teachers
This is an interesting web site created by Kathi Mitchell. She has created some nice resources based on the activities of John Van de Walle. You may find them useful if you want to use any of the activities with your class. There is some other good resources, but the Van de Walle ones were what caught my eye. |

Everyday Math Resources from the Center School
This is a well organized web page organized by the Everyday Math curriculum. It has some general tools and a page for each grade level. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you will find other links that might be of interest such as eMints (large data base of lessons sorted by themes), Smart Board lessons and ideas, and Tech Help (a series of tutorials about various types of software such as Excel and building web pages). Be sure to check out the classroom resources link. It has a lot of good stuff for the primary grades.

CGI Mathematics for Parents Newsletters
This is a link that lists a series of newsletters that were written for classroom teachers using CGI to send home with children during the school year, however, they are also a great resource for teachers as they are learning about the CGI philosophy and approach. I think newsletters 1, 2, 16, and 17 are especially informative. |
Annenberg Video Library: A Professional Development Opportunity
This is an amazing FREE resource. It is graduate level courses that you can access from your computer. There is over 50 topics that you can choose from. The really nice thing is you can watch videos of actual classrooms. This link takes you to the Elementary Math Library, but this site has courses for every subject and grade level. |
Teacher TV- This is a site created in England. It has lots of short videos on various topics of interest to teachers. This link takes you to the math browser, but you can access videos on other topics and subject areas by clicking on the "Videos" tab near the top of the page.
