Symmetricom 58532A Antenna 12v Mod

The Symmetricom 58532A L1 GPS Antenna only support 5V (4.5-5.5 VDC). Most of the GPS systems (like the TS2100) supported only 5V DC bias voltage over the antenna feed. Some of the newer systems, like the Microsemi/Symmetricom SyncServer, provide a 12V DC bias voltage on the antenna feed.

The Symmetricom 58532A antenna includes NO voltage regulator and a TVS zener diode for surge and over voltage protection. This has a clamp voltage of about 10v. The internal circuit includes an amplifier and bandpass filter. These devices are driven by a simple resistor voltage divider and makes about 3.3V from a 5V feed (@20ma).

The board layout includes space for a LDO regulator and needed ceramic capacitors but they were not included (for cost reasons?). It's a simple process to change/remove/add the needed components to provide on-board voltage regulation supporting 5 to 15 volts from the antenna feed.
