The first schoolhouse in Newington was built in 1729.  It was a one room schoolhouse near the church.  The only books were called horn books which were paddle shaped pieces of wood with paper fastened to them.  The paper had printing such as the alphabet or a few sentences on it and was covered with a thin piece of horn to protect it.
